Kolkata: Veteran actor and thespian Soumitra Chatterjee, who played the central characters in most of the films of Satyajit Ray, will receive the Legion of Honour, the highest civilian award of France.
Ray, too, received the award in 1987. French President Frantois Mitterrand came to Kolkata to honour the maestro.
Eighty two year old Chatterjee was honoured with the Dadasahe Phalke Award in 2012. He received a formal letter from the Government of France on Friday. Alexandre Ziegler, the french ambassador to India, is slated to present him with the honour in Kolkata.
Asked how it felt to be awarded with legion of honour Chatterjee said: “There cannot be any comparison. Ray was a director of global stature. His films were screened at top festivals around the world.”
